Italy (Rome)

What do you see in Rome when you have an 11 hour layover? The Colosseo district, without a doubt… It’s about an hour drive from the airport but well worth catching a 6 euro ride on one of the local buses to town… They will drop you at one of the central squares downtown and from there, you walk your socks off! After a long flight, the walking is welcomed but the oppressive heat? It was a bit much… If there hadn’t been a wonderful breeze, I’m not sure how long we would have been able to walk in the hot sun. Find a good spot to sit in the shade and people watch so you don’t over heat…

As you walk through this amazing part of Rome, if you’re familiar with the New Testament at all, you immediately begin to imagine the Apostle Paul ministering on the streets and then writing letters to different churches while in prison… It’s amazing to think of the distance he traveled from Israel to become one of the first missionaries of the Gospel…

The Colosseum is an amazing structure… It definitely screams “Rome” when you see it in pictures or the movies… Quite amazing to stand in front of it and see how massive it really is… They say it can hold 50,000+ people – some have estimated as much as 87,000… It’s really kind of a bittersweet experience to see it in person… You look at the Colosseum and think about how many Christians were eaten by lions or had to fight to the death… Kind of eerie to be honest… Rome is interesting in the sense that so many Christians were persecuted so many years ago and now everywhere you look there’s a church, a cross, a picture of the Pope, etc. Interesting how quickly things change…

While you’re in this district, make sure you go by the Musei Capitolini, Palazzo Venezia, and The Roman Forum… There’s ton to see in this city and Rome is definitely worth a quick visit…
