Trip Planning for Georgia

Travel

Tbilisi, Georgia… Not a place I ever dreamed in a million years I’d have the honor of seeing but I’m increasingly excited about seeing this new land.  Our official dates will be decided today or tomorrow and it will be wonderful to finally have it set in stone…

We’re going to be buying our tickets any day now as well and I’m already thinking about the 25+ hour travel time to get there (praying for a layover in Germany or some other neat country I haven’t been to)!  So far, Turkish Airlines has been quoting us the best deal – though a “deal” this day and age is not what a “deal” used to be 5-10 years ago… It used to be that you could fly to the UK for around $700 and now the more realistic price is $1100-$1200 and that’s if you are not flying during the high season… For summer time, expect to pay anywhere from $1500-$2200 for your round trip ticket to anywhere in Europe.  The ticket purchase will be the largest expense of our upcoming trip but once that is out of the way, we can breathe a sigh of relief!

Tbilisi is an extremely affordable place to visit… The current exchange rate is 1 GEL (“Lari”) to .60 USD — as I’ve been monitoring it the last few weeks, this seems to be a pretty steady rate…  After traveling through the UK where it’s almost 1 GBP to 1.50 USD, this was good news!!  Once you’ve purchased your airline ticket, you can stay very inexpensively in hostels ($10-$20/night) and ride the Metro for under a $1 (this is according to a recent post on www.tripadvisor.com).

Our Russian contact and the minister we’ll be ministering with while we’re in Georgia has told us that the Georgian food is the best food she’s tasted in all of her travels… This royally excites me!!  :)  From what I can gather, meals will cost anywhere from $4-10 and the food looks fantastic…  I love to eat and I find that some of the best times I’ve had on the mission field and while I’ve traveled in general have been while we are all gathered around the table dining on good food and sharing what God’s put on our hearts with others…

And last but most importantly, I’m very much excited about meeting the Georgian people and having face to face converstations with them…  From what we’ve been told, the Georgians are very personable and very open to hearing the Gospel…  We will be with them for about 12 days and we’re trusting the Lord that our time spent with them will leave a long lasting impact both in their lives and our’s as well…

Our small team is starting to come together… We have about 4 other possible members who have shown interest for this trip… If you’ve been feeling your heart that maybe you’re to go with us, send me a note… Would love to hear from you…

I will post more updates as we keep working out the details but in the meanwhile you, my reader, need to get out — travel, make the most of your days on this beautiful earth… That trip you’ve been postponing or dragging your feet on, it’s time… If you have the money and you’re just dreading the trip planning, send me a note… I’ll do some research for you and send you back some good ideas of where to go, what to see, where to stay, what to do, and what to eat… But DO IT!!!  Get your passport in line and go for it!  You will never regret stepping out and seeing the world…
